The late, great freestyle legend Eyedea was known for building and honing his skills by inviting MCs to the studio in his mom’s Saint Paul home for epic freestyle sessions. Brother Ali would join artists from around the Twin Cities to share their newest music and go off the head for hours at a time. Eyedea had a never-ending supply of beats and freestyle exercises to keep everyone engaged and on their toes, and the entire community grew stronger as a result. Rest In Peace to Mikey “Eyedea” Larson who passed away in 2010.
In the winter of 2011, Brother Ali reached out to a similar circle of spitters in an attempt to harness that creative energy. Ali’s demanding tour schedule didn’t allow his gatherings to blossom, but for several weeks a group of artists met in his basement to play new music and trade freestyles into the night.
One Monday morning, Ali was up for before-dawn prayers and decided to put together a song to impress his friends that evening. They approved, and here we are.
