After years of perfecting his intimate first-hand autobiographical songwriting, Ali decided to widen his focus on 2008’s album “Us”. Each of the songs feature stories of Ali’s friends and family, most of them told from Ali’s perspective as an admiring companion. This is highlighted most on Babygirl, his account of loving and witnessing a romantic partner as they process and heal from the trauma of sexual violence.

It isn’t all narrative tales though. Brother Ali is fully in his MC bag on Crown Jewel, The Preacher, Best@it, Round Here, and Bad Mufucker Pt. 2. The album opens with a sermon from Chuck D of Public Enemy and features Minneapolis music legend Stokely Williams from Mint Condition on vocals.
